Contractor will fix I-26 over next 18 months

The NCDOT has awarded a $12.5 million contract to improve a 10-mile stretch of I-26 in Henderson County. The contract went to Harrison Construction Co. of Knoxville, Tenn. Work is expected to begin in April and last until October 2017.

“The project is to essentially repair some faulting concrete slabs and to resurface the interstate,” said Division 14 construction engineer Brian Burch. “It’s a necessary project to keep the road in good condition until the Transportation Improvement Program project for I-4400 is begins in about four years.”

There will be some lane and speed restrictions in the construction area during daytime hours through the week and more in the evenings. However, traffic should be open on holidays and weekends. C

“We hope to keep the impact to traffic as minimal as possible,” Burch said. “They’ll be going out to some of the slabs that are bouncing up and down and they’ll do some injection molding to stabilize them then come back with an ultra-thin asphalt covering.”

Drivers along this route are urged to use caution and slow down through the work zone for their safety as well as the safety of passengers, those headed in the opposite direction as well as construction crews close to the roadway.
