Village boots talk of police coverage

FLAT ROCK — The Flat Rock Village Council has not yet made a decision on whether to try to secure a sheriff’s deputy for police coverage of the village.

For the past four years, the council has discussed whether it should contract with the Sheriff’s Office to pay one deputy for weekday coverage. That option is now in doubt because the sheriff and the Henderson County Board of Commissioners  pulled a similar contract in Mills River, saying the $110,000 that town paid was too little.
“Right now we don’t have an opportunity to engage the sheriff in even discussing enhanced police service because they’ve been told by the county we’re not going to do that,” Mayor Bob Staton said. “My understanding is they are once again discussing it with Mills River.”

Some Flat Rock residents have urged the Village Council to contract for a sheriff's deputy in hopes the village would get better response on dog control complaints. Now, however, the council is under pressure from Highland Golf Villas residents who say the Park at Flat Rock needs more regular policing. The council booted the discussion to a budget workshop on May 31.
