Hendersonville again No. 1 for retirement

Hendersonville again ranked at the top of a survey measuring retirement communities, ranking No. 1 in North Carolina and 23rd nationally.

SmartAsset ranked the cities with the most recreational and social opportunities for retirees as part of a study on the Best Places to Retire. The index factors in the number of recreation centers and retirement centers available to seniors as well as what percentage of the city’s population they represent.

The study said Hendersonville had 8.5 doctors, 1.7 rec centers and 1.1 retirement centers per 1,000 residents. The percentage of seniors was 28.1 percent.

The rest of the top in North Carolina was Southern Pines, Hickory, Pinehurst, Marion, Brevard, Forest City, Reidsville, Mount Airy and Mocksville.
