Saluda celebrates 53rd annual Coon Dog Day Saturday

Parade is a highlight of Coondog Day in Saluda.

SALUDA — Saluda and dog lovers from far and wide will celebrate the 53rd annual Coon Dog Day Saturday with a walk-run, coon dog competition, the annual parade, music, food and more.

The Coon Dog Day 5K Race/Fun Walk will begin and end in downtown Saluda.

Entertainment begins on the Main Stage at 8 a.m. and continues until 11 at night.

Anyone who wants to appear in the Coon Dog Day Parade should line up on Howard Gap Road, turning left on Esseola which becomes Henderson. Follow Henderson, which becomes Seminary to Ozone. Turn right onto Ozone Drive to Main Street. A police officer and parade volunteers will help direct parade entries. Prizes will be awarded to the best entries.

An AKC licensed Show & special Youth Show open to all coonhounds will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Pavilion in McCreery Park in downtown Saluda.

The first youth Big Wheel Race is at 4 p.m. with a Young'uns Race for kids 14 and under and a Wanna Be Young'uns Race for kids over 14. Kids enter for free, adults pay $10. "The point is to look silly and raise money," the city says. Racers should wear a helmet, closed-toe shoes and long pants (jeans recommended). Big Wheel racers must have plastic wheels.

The street dance from 7 to 11 p.m. features Project-X playing music for all ages.

There is free parking at the Episcopal Church on Charles Street and at the Saluda School parking lot on Seminary Street. Handicap parking will be at the Saluda First Baptist Church. There will be paid parking at the Saluda Fire Department on Greenville Street and in the Saluda School parking lot on Hwy. 176.
