Police probe rash of smash-and-grabs

Hendersonville police are investigating a series of smash-and-grab burglaries of cars parked around Hendersonville High School at the Friday night football game.

“We had seven of them around the Hendersonville football game on Friday night,” said police Capt. Bruce Simonds. The thief or thieves smashed side and stole purses, GPS units and other valuables that were visible.
The cars were on Fleming, Oakland and Buncombe streets and in the Immaculata church parking lot, Simonds said. The window damage was generally $200 to $250. In one case a victim reported the loss of $150 in cash; most lost $20 to $40 plus the purses and in one case two cell phones.
“It was a crime of opportunity by somebody walking by and seeing items in plain view,” he said. “The broke the windows and fled the scene.”
The department’s advice for preventing smash-and-grab thefts? “Put them in the trunk where they’re not seen,” Simonds said. “Any thing of value — conceal it in the trunk or in the console or something.”
City police also investigated two similar thefts on Oct. 6 in the 500 block of North Oak Street. “And we had a series of three in one night at the Mountain Lodge on Upward Road,” Simonds added. The Mountain Lodge smash-and-grabs were part of a rash of burglaries at motel parking lots that extended to Brevard, investigators learned.
