Film festival highlights mountain traditions

Betty Smith is among the traditional oldtime musicians featured.

A legendary moonshiner, a renowned song collector and a sneak peek at an upcoming documentary on mountain music highlight the Culture Vulture Film Festival on Friday at the Blue Ridge Conference Hall at BRCC.

“The Last One,” a film about moonshiner Popcorn Sutton, and “A Mightly Fine Memory,” about fiddler extraordinaire Roger Howell, and a first look at “Knee to Knee: The Roots of Mountain Music,” a film by David Weintraub and the Center for Cultural Preservation. The film features Joe Penland, Sheila Kay Adams, Betty Smith, David Holt, Donna Ray Norton, Doug Orr and others.
The festival starts at 6 p.m. music by Aaron Coffin and barbecue catered by Hawg Wild Barbecue, MoJo’s Barbecue & Grill and Moe’s Original Barbecue.
