New Habitat director sets goals

Ron Laughter

Ron Laughter has begun work as the new executive director of Henderson County's Habitat for Humanity.

Laughter, a native of Michigan, was a consultant in non-profit management based in the Upstate of South Carolina before taking the job to run Henderson County's very active Habitat program.
"I have two primary objectives," he said. "One is to raise the funds needed to launch the Dodd Meadows development, which is our next major phase of housing, and the second is to help transition the board from a working board to a governing board."
The board has had to take on more day-to-day operations than it ought to and that "creates limits to what the organization can do," he said.
A graduate of Michigan State University and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Laughter never practiced law and never wanted to, he said. Yet he is glad to have earned a law degree.
"It teaches you how to think differently than the average bear and I've used that every day in my professional life," he said.
