Apodaca reappointed to legislative research panel

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger has reappointed Sen. Tom Apodaca as the Senate chairman of the Legislative Research Commission for the 2013-14 biennium.

The Commission, which meets periodically until the legislature returns in May 2014, is tasked with helping ensure North Carolina's government operates as efficiently and effectively as possible. It is responsible for studying ways to improve governmental agencies, institutions and other public policy. The results of the Commission's studies are often incorporated into legislation that is considered during the following legislative session.

"The Legislative Research Commission helps fulfill a critical responsibility of the General Assembly: ensuring North Carolina's government is operating as it should be," Berger said. "I thank Sen. Apodaca for his service and commitment to keeping our state's government accountable to its citizens."

In addition to chairing the Legislative Research Commission, Apodaca will also serve as a member of the Legislative Services Commission, the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations and the Joint Legislative Education Oversight and Election Oversight committees.

Apodaca, currently serving in his sixth term in the North Carolina Senate, is Chairman of the powerful Senate Rules Committee that controls the flow of legislation and governance of the chamber's operations.
