County GOP hopes to land big-name Senate candidates

The Henderson County Republican Party postponed its annual convention a week in hopes of getting a good lineup of U.S. Senate candidates.

"We did move it to March 22 to increase our likelihood of getting the Senate candidates," Chairman Andrew Riddle told the Republican Men's Club last week. "We were in competition with about 12 other counties statewide on March 15. The likelihood of us getting a 'name' candidate was not good. In all likelihood we will have three candidates" on the 22nd.
Riddle didn't say which three. The candidates include state House Speaker Thom Tillis, Greg Brannon, a physician and Tea Party activist; Mark Harris, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church in Charlotte; former Shelby mayor Ted Alexander, Bill Flynn, a radio host and 2012 congressional candidate; Edward Kryn, a retired physician from Clayton; and nurse practitioner Heather Grant.
The annual convention will be held at the Opportunity House.
