District attorney makes endorsement in sheriff's race

Greg Newman speaks to the Republican Men's Club on Jan. 22.

District Attorney Greg Newman praised Sheriff Charlie McDonald and urged Republicans help the incumbent continue in the job.

"That must be the best job to have because everybody wants to run for sheriff," Newman joked as he opened his remarks a Republican Men's Club meeting this week. The one the county has, he added, is the one it should keep.
Newman went on to make a strong endorsement of McDonald, who took office in March 2012 after the county Republican Executive Committee appointed him to fill the vacancy left by Rick Davis's resignation.
McDonald assumed the top job "amidst some turmoil in the Sheriff's Department," said Newman, who became district attorney last July. "He has calmed the waters there. The morale of that department is in my opinion high, and more important than that I see and observe that the work quality of that department is very solid.
"The sheriff is doing a good job and I hope that all of us here will help Sheriff McDonald continue in that position. We need someone of his experience, we need someone that can keep continuity. He's doing a fine job and I like dealing with the Sheriff's Department."
