'Most conservative' rep taps Meadows

Congressional candidate Mark Meadows

Congressional candidate Mark Meadows won the endorsement Thursday from a South Carolina congressman who lays claim to the title of "most conservative member of Congress."

Meadows, who has been winning most straw polls across the district and has a broad organization, announced the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan. Duncan is rated the "most conservative member of Congress" by the Heritage Foundation and has been recognized as a "Taxpayer's Hero" for his work combating wasteful government spending and fighting against tax increases, the Meadows campaign said in a news release.

Open Doors USA, a group that advocates for religious freedom, gave Duncan a perfect score for his first year in Congress, the campaign said. Meadows is the only candidate in the eight-person Republican primary to receive an A+ rating from the Heritage Foundation.

"Mark Meadows will fight for what's right, because he understands that higher taxes and more regulations are not the way to solve our country's problems," Duncan said in the release. "Mark is a proven conservative who has spent years working for conservative causes. Conservatives of Western North Carolina should send Mark Meadows to Congress. We need his help."

Meadows promised to be as conservative a vote as the South Carolina Republican.

"I admire Congressman Duncan very much because of his stance on the issues that are most important, like cutting taxes and getting rid of excessive red tape that is strangling our economy," he said. "If the people of Western North Carolina will trust me enough to represent them in Congress, I will stand strong with leaders like Congressman Duncan to get our country back on track."

In recent weeks, Meadows has won back-to-back straw polls in Burke, Henderson, Caldwell, Buncombe, Transylvania, and Swain Counties. He has also picked up major endorsements from 2nd Amendment advocate Grass Roots NC PAC, 2010 GOP nominee Jeff Miller, the Family Research Council's Action PAC, Dr. Michael Farris, the founder of the Home School Legal Defense Association and both the Buncombe and Caldwell County Tea Party. Meadows is also supported by numerous NC sheriffs and other elected officials throughout North Carolina.
