Ian Smith, son of Michelle and Michael Smith and grandson of Virgle and Reva McClure of Etowah, will be playing with the University of Tennessee Rugby Team in the Final Four at the Rugby National Championship on May 18-19 in Sandy, Utah.Smith, who will graduate on May 11 with a bachelor of science degree in sociology and minor in psychology with an emphasis in criminal justice, has been on the Dean's List for the last three years, works part-time and is a three-year starter on the rugby team at the prop position.
Rugby is grown in popularity in the United States with its inclusion in the upcoming Olympic games. It is 80 minutes of fast-paced athleticism with no time-outs and a very brief half-time in a sport which many describe as a combination of soccer and football.
