Fountainhead is changing its name

The Fountainhead Bookstore at 408 N. Main St. is changing its name to Novels & Novelties Bookstore.

The transition to the new name started this week. Everything about the store otherwise will remain the same. Perhaps owing to the fact that it shared its name with the well-known 1943 Ayn Rand novel that signifies the triumph of individualism over collectivism, the Fountainhead Bookstore had led to some confusion among book cunsumers.

“Our name was often misunderstood,” owner Valerie Welbourn said. “And after six years, it appears that it is still misunderstood by many. So we decided to just make a swap.”
The store will retire its whale logo, which was inspired by a phrase in Moby Dick that referred to the whale as a “Fountainhead.” “Also, fountainhead means the source of something, so we thought it was a tribute to authors who were the sources of poems, novels, etc.,” Welbourn added.
To celebrate the change, the bookstore is sponsoring a Logo Contest. The winner will receive $100 cash and a $150 gift certificate to the bookstore and be feted at a party on April 30 (Indie Bookstore Day) officially unveiling the new logo. Entries are due by midnight of March 30. The winner will be announced on April 10. Additional rules for the contest can be found at http://www.novelsandnovelties.com/.
