Bankers honor firefighters, law officers on 9/11

Renee Elrod poses with display at TDBank on South Main Street that honored firefighters and police on Sept. 11.

Renee Elrod says people should remember, on Sept. 11, that "our firefighters and police officers are out there every day."

It's more natural for her to remember than most. Her father, Joe Novak, was a volunteer firefighter and police officer in Broward County, Fla., for 43 years. He lives here now. Elrod, assistant branch manager of TDBank on South Main Street, put up a display of 9-11 memorabilia on Sept. 11, most of which her dad had collected. Then she and branch manager Mandy Forbes loaded up 10 dozen doughnuts and dropped them off at the Hendersonville, Valley Hill and Blue Ridge fire departments, the Hendersonville police department and Henderson County sheriff's office. "I think they were surprised and touched at the same time," Elrod said.
