Runners flee from zombies in the woods

FLAT ROCK — More than 100 runners fled from 35 zombies on a 2.4-mile trail through the woods Sunday afternoon in the first annual Zombie Escape to benefit the Chamber of Commerce and the Henderson County Soccer Association.

Runners sprinted away from the zombies, made up in a realistically frightful way by Jennifer Treadway and the makeup department of Blue Ridge Community College, and tried to reach the finish line before zombies ripped all three flags from their waist.
If they made it, they
were deemed a survivor. If they lost their flags, they were infected. No matter what, finishers enjoyed wings, chips, veggies, soft drinks and beer in the gym at Camp Ton-A-Wandah. The event, which drew 112 runners, was sponsored by Hunter Subaru.
"It was awesome," race director Ellen Seagle said of the feedback she received from the runners, who enjoyed near-perfect fall weather as they raced for the finish line. "So far I've heard nothing but everybody loved it and they can't wait to do it again."
Thee two organizations are already planning the second annual Zombie Escape for next year the weekend after Halloween, she said.
