LEGISLATIVE RACES: Caskey wins Democratic nomination for Senate; Moffitt cruises

Brian Caskey won the Democratic nomination for the 48th Senate District on Tuesday, setting up a Nov. 3 challenge against incumbent Sen. Chuck Edwards, a Republican who had no primary opposition.

Caskey, the first Democrat elected to the Mills River Town Council, won 50 percent of the vote over Cristal Figueroa, who had 33 percent, and Najah Underwood, with 17 percent.

In the Republican primary for the open House District 117 seat, former state Rep. Tim Moffitt defeated Dennis Justice with 79 percent of the vote. In the Democratic primary, Josh Remillard of Mills River had 56 percent of the vote over Dane Aicher, who had dropped out. The term of Rep. Chuck McGrady, who did not seek re-election, expires in January 2021.
