Kindergarten signup starts Tuesday

The Henderson County school system is accepting enrollment for kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year starting Tuesday.

The school system is enrolling children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31. Early kindergarten registration in February and March allows schools to communicate important messages leading up to the start of school, including how children can begin preparing for their first day of kindergarten while still at home.

The link to register is available on the school system website (hendersoncountypublic schoolsnc.org), social media and in advertisements in local online and print media.

This year, preparation will include early access to “Kindergarteners Can!” videos, illustrating the early childhood skills kindergarteners can be expected to use and practice daily at school. Families can receive email links to the video series, as well as school-specific orientation activities and messages this spring.

When using the online enrollment form, guardians will be able to upload required documentation including proof of residency and birth certificates, indicate plans for bus transportation, notify the district of a child’s medical needs or Individual Education Plan needs and more. These details about the incoming Class of 2034 give HCPS administrators more accurate numbers and logistical needs for the upcoming school year.

Families new to kindergarten registration or at least new to completing enrollment online may have questions about the process. Elementary school principals will be answering frequently asked questions in upcoming videos on social media channels. Incoming kindergarten families are encouraged to submit questions about the kindergarten registration process in a Google form shared on social media and on the HCPS website (under “Latest News) and tune in this week for videos in English and Spanish with the answers. Families that prefer to register their children for kindergarten in person will be able to do so at elementary schools on March 23, 24 and 25.
