Henderson County now owns the Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post 5206.
County Commission Chair Bill Lapsley announced on Monday night that the county had closed on the purchase last week. Commissioners on Monday night appropriated $52,715 toward the purchase and preliminary design of the early 1950s building.
On the market a year ago for more than $500,000, the building was sold to the county for just $35,635, an amount VFW leaders were willing to accept because the county has committed to allowing the post to continue to use the facility for meetings, dances and dinners and to store and display their trove of military memorabilia.
Commissioners also appropriated $17,580 for architects fees and professional services to begin design of a renovation. Lapsley said he expected the commissioners to work with the architect as they begin to make decisions on what improvements to make and when.
