History group to honor early Valley Hill principal

The Henderson County Education History Initiative is inviting to the public a dedication ceremony of a plaque honoring Mrs. Julia Trimble Redden at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Valley Hill School.

A teacher and principal at the school from the early 1900s to 1945, Mrs. Redden is regarded as one of the earliest female principals in North Carolina.

The plaque dedication ceremony will be conducted “rain or shine” on the former site of Valley Hill School located at 175 South Carolina Avenue off Willow Road near the Valley Hill Fire Department.

In accordance with current Covid-19 protocols, face masks and social distancing are encouraged. Parking will be available on-site, but no parking will be permitted on neighboring properties.

The Steering Committee of the Henderson County Education History Initiative, descendants of Julia Trimble Redden, and Kirby Johnson, current owner of the school property, invite all individuals wishing to commemorate the contributions and service of one of Henderson County’s outstanding educators to attend the dedication.
