PARK GLANCE: Rhododendron Lake Park

Rhododendron Lake Park

Size: 9 acres off Lake Drive and Laurel Park Highway, Laurel Park.
Cost: $250,000 for first phase (funded as part of a mitigation agreement), the relocation of a stream that is undermining Lake Drive. Three acres must remain in a conservation easement controlled by the Corps of Engineers. Other improvements would come in later phases.
Status: The Laurel Park Town Board authorized a contract with a consultant managing a mitigation project that will pay for the first phase of work.
Quote: "We have a 9½-acre park and a little more than three acres will go into a conservation easement," says George Banta, chair of a park advisory committee. "They'll give us a quarter million dollars to handle the relocation of this stream. For this money in perpetuity this land is not used. If that's compatible with a public park then it's a no brainer. Take the money and do it."
