The Henderson County's tax office is asking residents to be wary of fraudulent phone calls targeting taxpayers in the local community.
Several residents during the last few days have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be representatives of the tax office. The scammers falsely claim that the recipients of the calls owe taxes and must make immediate payments to avoid legal action, according to a news release county officials issued Wednesday.
The tax office emphasized that the calls are fraudulent and went on to urge residents not to provide any personal or financial information to the callers. Legitimate representatives from the county tax office will never make unsolicited calls demanding immediate payment or requesting sensitive information over the phone, the news release said.
People who receive a call that they suspect is fraudulent, should take the following steps:
• Do not provide any personal or financial information to the caller.
• Hang up immediately.
• Report the incident to the Henderson County tax office at 828-697-5595.
• Consider reporting the incident to local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ftc.gov/complaint.
For official information regarding tax status or any inquiries contact the Henderson County tax office directly at 828-697-5595, hendersoncountync.gov/tax or in person at 200 N. Grove St. The Henderson County Tax Office is committed to the security and well-being of county residents and appreciates citizen cooperation in helping combat fraud in the community.
