Deputies return fire after gunman crashes van and shoots at them

Henderson County sheriff’s deputies exchanged gunfire Saturday night with an armed man who had been threatening people in the North Mills River Campground, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office received a call at 6:07 p.m. that a man with a gun was threatening people at the campground. After officers arrived, the suspect drove off and deputies gave chase. After driver crashed his van, he fired shots from the vehicle. leading to the exchange of gunfire, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Based on sheriff's office protocol for officer-involved shootings, the deputies involved were placed on administrative leave and the SBI was notified and is currently conducting an investigation. No further information was released as of Saturday night, the news release said, citing the fact that the investigation is ongoing.
