City sewage spill cleanup underway

Officials in Hendersonville were working on Wednesday to cleanup a sewage spill that flowed into Mud Creek, according to a statement from the city.

The City of Hendersonville’s Wastewater Collection System experienced a spill of untreated wastewater beginning Tuesday evening and continuing into the early morning hours of Wednesday. City staff were notified of the spill at 6:28 a.m. on Wednesday and quickly stopped the spill by 6:45 a.m., the city said.
The spill was caused by a contractor performing improvements to the sewer collection system near 310 Williams St. in Hendersonville. An estimated 100,400 gallons of untreated wastewater were released and a portion of the discharge reached Mud Creek, a tributary within the French Broad River Basin. Cleanup efforts were underway Wednesday evening. City officials were also working on Wednesday with the contractor to ensure appropriate corrective measures are taken.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Water Resources (DWR) was notified of the spill on Wednesday and will be reviewing the incident.
