U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards and the front-runner in the Democratic primary to oppose him vaulted into substantial leads to win their party's nomination on Tuesday, setting up a widely watched general election battle.
In early returns, Edwards led challenger Adam R. Smith with 71 percent of the vote while Jamie Ager, a cattle farmer from Fairview and the grandson of former U.S. Jamie Clarke, led Dr. Richard Hudspeth, the retired CEO of Blue Ridge Health, 54-19.
