Construction under way on Graveyard Fields trail connector

Construction has begun on a new Upper Falls Connector Trail at Graveyard Fields, a major step in a long-term restoration.

The Pisgah Conservancy, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Blue Ridge Parkway, broke ground May 19. The 1-mile trail will connect the John Rock Overlook parking area on the parkway to the valley floor of Graveyard Fields.

Located near Milepost 419 on the parkway, Graveyard Fields is known for its waterfalls, mountain vistas and rare high-elevation ecosystems. The area has faced mounting infrastructure challenges from heavy visitation, severe weather and aging trail systems.

“In many ways, this new trail construction project is a linchpin of the Graveyard Fields project at large,” said Jeff Maitz, the Pisgah Conservancy’s chief operating officer and program director. “The completion of the project this fall will allow for the methodical restoration of trails, streambanks and red spruce habitat.”

The new trail will also improve emergency access by accommodating UTV vehicles and reducing the need for lengthy carry-outs over rough terrain. The trail will include bridges and boardwalks designed to minimize habitat impacts.

Visitors should expect minimal disruption during construction. Up to half the parking spaces at the John Rock Overlook may be used by the contractor throughout the construction period. A temporary one- to two-day closure of the west side of the Graveyard Fields Loop Trail may occur in mid-June. Construction is expected to conclude by mid-September, ahead of leaf season.
