Bonesteel's George Masa documentary screens free Nov. 14

George Masa’s photos drew attention to the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and helped create support for the creation of the national park.

Emmy-winning director Paul Bonesteel will sign copies of his book and screen his documentary A Life Reimagined about Japanese photographer George Masa on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center, 195 Hemphill Knob Road, Asheville. The event is free.

The book signing begins at 11 a.m. and the screening at 1 p.m. Bonesteel will take questions afterward about the film, the book he co-wrote with Janet McCue and his travels to Japan.

Masa’s story is one of tragedy, perseverance, and reinvention. From personal struggles in Japan and the Pacific Northwest to a new life in North Carolina, he found purpose in photographing and exploring the mountains he came to love. His work and dedication contributed to the growing movement to protect the region’s natural beauty, including the creation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Decades of research uncovered the mysteries that obscured Masa’s story. A Life Reimagined brings his compelling story into focus, illuminating the life of an artist whose contributions to the Appalachian region endure today.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is a promotional partner for the event. Bonesteel has served on the foundation’s board of trustees and is an adviser to the nonprofit.
