The city of Hendersonville and Elks Lodge 1616 have partnered to repair restroom facilities at Sullivan Park on Ashe Street in Hendersonville.
The project will be completed with a $10,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation and volunteer labor from the local lodge. The repairs will include wider doors, new plumbing and fixtures. Prior to the repairs, the restrooms will be thoroughly cleaned and painted. In addition, timed locks will be placed on the restrooms doors, similar to those at the Patton Park restrooms, for added security and convenience. The project should be complete by late spring.
The grant to the Hendersonville lodge was one of 47 awarded out of 150 applications submitted to the National Elks Foundation.
According to City Manager John Connet, Frank Brady approached Mayor Volk in late summer about finding a community project for the Elks National Foundation Grant program. Mayor Volk and city officials determined that the Sullivan Park restrooms were the perfect project. The restrooms had been closed for a number of years due to vandalism, but the park was seeing a great deal of use from the Henderson County Boys and Girls Club and the Green Meadows neighborhood.
"We felt that it was time to reopen these restrooms and show the neighborhood that the City had not forgotten about them," Mayor Volk said in a news release. "We are very pleased to partner with the Elks Lodge on this project." The project is the first of several projects planned for Sullivan Park over the next 18 months.
