Restaurant roundup: Pi-Squared to open

Servicemen who came home to Detroit after World War II wanted pizza in a deep pan like they had gotten in Europe.

“They started cooking it in the automotive plant tray pans that they put parts in,” said Karen Rampey. Detroit-style pizza has been popular ever since. In a few weeks, Hendersonville residents will get a chance to sample the Motor City specialty plus wings and lots of other Italian treats at Rampey’s “Made in Detroit” Pi-Squared Pizza at 1972 Haywood Road.
While Pi-Squared will offer its signature Detroit-style pies, Rampey has created a broad menu that also includes thin-crust round pizza, wings, cheese breaksticks, subs on homemade bread and salads.
“It will be something different, not the same as everyone else,” Rampey said. “We’ve already got people calling” asking when they will be open. “It’s going to be the best pizza they ever ate.”
Although it’s in a former Energy Mart, the space won’t look or feel like a convenience store. Contractors now are adding lighting and glass. “It will have an industrial look with high ceilings and stainless steel,” she said. In the spring she plans to add tables outside. Hours will be 11 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days week, though Rampey expects to extend hours as the restaurant gets busier.
