Habitat wins grant for playground

Henderson County Habitat has been awarded a grant of $20,000 from the Glass Foundation to build a nature playground at Habitat’s Dodd Meadows subdivision at Crest and Blue Ridge roads in East Flat Rock.

The Glass Foundation is a private family foundation based in Asheville and created in 2000 by Kenneth E. and Nancy J. Glass. "Habitat is grateful for The Glass Foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of families in Western North Carolina so they can create a brighter future," said Ron Laughter, president & CEO of Henderson County Habitat.

Dodd Meadows is currently home to 26 families and will be home to 110 families once completed. These families help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage of about $450 per month. Having a decent place to live at an affordable mortgage allows homeowners to save more, invest in education and pursue opportunity.

The playground will be designed to blend with the natural environment and include artificial rock terrain, a wood walk beam, a climbing net, a butterfly garden, a handicap ramp and a shaded picnic area. Also planned for the Habitat subdivision is a nature trail that will wind through the gently rolling land and a community garden where homeowners can grow their own produce.
