Board taps Clarke over Warwick as TDA chair

The Henderson County Board of Commissioners appointed Shannon Clarke as chair of the Tourism Development Authority in a 3-2 vote.

Clarke edged WTZQ radio station manager Mark Warwick, who had the support of commissioners Bill Lapsley and Grady Hawkins. Commissioners Tommy Thompson, Charlie Messer and Michael Edney voted for Clarke.
The commissioners took two separate votes related to the TDA makeup. They appointed Warwick to a vacant seat on the board and then appointed Clarke chair. He replaces David Nicholson, whom the commissioners had made chair a year ago, in Clarke’s place.
“I know Mark. I just think he’d make a good member of the board and a chairman,” Hawkins said. “He has excellent communications skills. I just think he’d be articulate with the board’s message.”
Lapsley said, “I don’t know that I had a particular ax to grind” with the vote.

Edney nominated and voted for Amber McCleerey for the vacant seat. The other four voted for Warwick.
