Latin festival may be coming to Main Street

A new festival celebrating Latin culture may be coming to Main Street in September.

The city’s Downtown Advisory and Special Events committees have both recommended that the Hendersonville City Council approve the festival when it meets on Thursday.
Applicant Adriana Chavela said the purpose of the event is to educate the public about Latin American countries and cultures through art, music, dance and food. Called Fiesta - Celebrating our Culture, Celebrating our City, the event would be held noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25.
“When most people are asked to described Latin culture, they typically say colorful,” Chavela said. “That’s a common thread that weaves itself through the many Spanish-speaking countries of the world. However, what many people perceive as one culture is in fact many.”
The festival will showcase 20 countries through music, dance and art. Chavela said the fiesta expects to have 40 to 50 vendors and kids events, community events, entertainment, health booths and 30 food and retail vendors in the Visitors Center parking lot and on South Main Street between Allen and Barnwell streets.
Sponsored by Hola Carolina magazine of Arden, the fiesta expects to draw 1,000 to 3,000 people.
