Emergency repair on I-26 will result in long backup

The N.C. Department of Transportation has clossed one of two eastbound lanes on Interstate 26 for an emergency repair.

On Friday night, Transportation engineers from Division 14 determined a 15-foot slab of the pavement between the Airport Road overpass and the on-ramp was too dangerous for vehicles to traverse and required immediate action.

The right lane from underneath the overpass on Airport Road will be closed for at least 500 yards today. The impact to traffic west of Exit 40 is expected to be significant and could stack afternoon traffic for several miles.

Transportation officials hope to have it open by sunset on Saturday evening, and there is no local detour around the work.

The department encourages motorists to stay alert, obey the posted speed limit and slow down through construction zones. The NCDOT encourages motorists to educate themselves about the dangers associated with work zones. For real-time travel information, visit the Traveler Services section of NCDOT.gov or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
