Election qualifying: Coletta withdraws from Flat Rock Council race

As of Monday evening, 22 candidates have qualified to run for municipal offices in Henderson County.

Jeff Miller has joined the list of incumbents seeking a return to office, having filed July 12 for his seat on the Hendersonville City Council.

Sheryl Jamerson filed on Monday to run again for her District 1 seat on the Flat Rock Town Council.

Paul Marion has qualified to run for Saluda Commission, joining Mark Oxtoby and Carolyn Ashburn.

Anne Coletta, who had qualified for Flat Rock Town Council, dropped out Monday, replaced by newcomer Paige Posey. Posey is business manager for WTZQ and former managing director of the Flat Rock Playhouse.

“I have very much enjoyed my four years on the Flat Rock Village Council. We are fortunate that we have a council that works well together for the benefit of the village,” Coletta said. “While I was prepared to run again, I also thought that it might be time for me to move on to other things. When Paige Posey decided to throw her hat in the ring, I realized that was the perfect opportunity for me to bow out. Paige’s commitment to the Flat Rock community is well known and I believe her energy, enthusiasm, and unique perspective will be a great addition to our village government.”

Mills River District 3 Town Council member Shanon Gonce has decided not to run again, citing his wife’s illness.

John Moore, who had announced his candidacy for the Hendersonville City Council in June, is appealing a decision made last week by the Board of Elections, which determined Moore was not eligible to run because of his age. Moore, who is 20, has filed an appeal that will be heard July 20. The North Carolina Constitution states that individuals must be 21 to run for office.

Qualifying continues through noon Friday. The primary election is Oct. 10 and the general election is Nov. 7.
