Mills River sells Banner Farm land to craft brewery

MILLS RIVER — Already home to the second largest craft brewery on the East Coast, Mills River may soon be getting a second, much smaller brewery.

The Mills River Brewery, which now operates in a strip center at the Target shopping center on Airport Road in Arden, has outgrown that site and is looking for property in the town it's named for. The Mills River Town Council on Thursday authorized the sale of a 3.7-acre parcel for $416,250 on Banner Farm Road near N.C. 280. The parcel is part of a 25-acre tract of land the town has owned for more than 10 years. The larger parcel runs from Banner Farm Road to Presbyterian Church Road and runs along the private Brandy Branch Road on the north side.

The brewery liked the Banner Farm Road parcel because it was flat and close to public sewer, town officials said.

After Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., which is producing close to 1 million barrels a year, the Mills River Brewery would be the second beer maker in Mills River. With two other breweries slated to open in Hendersonville next year, Mills River Brewery would become the seventh craft brewery in Henderson County. The zoning of the Banner Farm land permits the brewery and taproom, Town Manager Jeff Wells said.
