Have flu symptoms? Try urgent care before ER, Pardee says

With recent reports of an increase in flu activity, Pardee UNC Health Care is experiencing a surge in patients, especially with visits to their Emergency Department.

The hospital would like to remind the community to use one of their two Urgent Care centers, located in Fletcher and Hendersonville, if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms or have medical issues that are non-life threatening or non-emergency. The Fletcher Urgent Care center offers later hours, remaining open until 9 p.m. and both locations are fully staffed.
The Health Department reports widespread flu activity in the state with many patients seeking health care due to flu and flu-like illness. Across the state, 20 patients have lost their lives to this infection. Flu symptoms include headache, muscle aches, cough, fever, sore throat, and/or runny or stuffy nose. Getting a flu vaccine is the best prevention measure.
If you are experiencing symptoms, you can reduce your chances of spreading it to others by covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the crook of your arm (not your hands); washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water or using hand sanitizer after coughing or sneezing, and before and after touching your face, nose and mouth; and not sharing utensils or cups.

In addition, the hospital would like to remind the community that visitor restrictions remain in place. As part of visitor restrictions, Pardee asks that:
· All children (12 and under) not visit patient rooms because children are more susceptible to infections and can be ill without obvious symptoms.
· All adults refrain from visiting loved ones in the hospital if they feel ill or have the following symptoms: headache, muscle aches, cough, fever, sore throat, and/or runny or stuffy nose.
· Anyone with such symptoms must wear a mask if they must visit the hospital or a physician’s office for the protection of health care workers and other members of the public.
