Officer shoots fleeing suspect who pulled gun, police say

Robert Gregory Robinson II

A Hendersonville police officer shot and wounded a suspect who ran away from the officer and later pulled a gun as the officer was chasing him, the city said in a news release.

Officer Keenan Nesbitt responded to a call at 12:23 a.m. Sunday of a man displaying a handgun outside Hannah Flanagan’s  at 300 N. Main St. The man, 36-year-old Robert Gregory Robinson II, refused to cooperate or comply with Officer Nesbitt’s instructions and instead ran down Third Avenue East and into Edwards Alley, police said. Nesbitt was running after Robinson when the suspect drew a firearm. Nesbitt drew his service weapon and fired a round, striking Robinson in the shoulder.

The suspect dropped his gun and ran. The wounded suspect, a convicted felon, was apprehended a short time later by assisting officers and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Nesbitt was not injured. Robinson was charged with possession of stolen firearm, altering or removing a serial number from a firearm and possession of a firearm by felon.
