Fake officer used blue lights to stop a car, sheriff says

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a man impersonating a police officer and using blue lights to stop a vehicle on U.S. 176 in Saluda at 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

The vehicle was also possibly seen traveling on U.S. 74 at about 7.30 p.m. traveling west into Polk County.

The individual was a white male with a moustache, wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, driving a light colored small SUV (possibly a white Toyota with tinted windows).

If you are unsure whether the person pulling you over is actually law enforcement, we recommend activating your hazard lights and reducing your speed before calling 911 to verify the officer's identity while driving to a populated, well lit area. Police also asked parents to inform your teenage drivers about the incident and what they need to do in this situation.

If you have any information about this vehicle or individual, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 828.894.3001 or Polk County Communications at 828.894.0187.
