Sex offender caught after chase, crash

Heatherly

A 38-year-old convicted sex offender was charged with resisting arrest after he sped away from U.S. marshals and led officers on a brief chase on I-26 before crashing on Upward Road, the sheriff's office said.

The United States Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, attempted to arrest Carl Sean Heatherly Sr. in the parking lot of Highlands Square on Wednesday. Heatherly was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender in Buncombe County.

When task force members encountered Heatherly, he immediately fled from officers in a vehicle and was pursued eastbound on I-26. He exited 4 miles later at Upward Road and crashed. After being taken into custody, he was jailed under a $16,300 bond. He is charged with one count of felony fleeing to elude arrest and one count of resisting a public officer. Other charges are possible. Authorities issued a felony arrest warrant for Teresa Ward Osteen for harboring a fugitive.
