Garden Jubilee is out downtown; will take place at shops and nurseries

Although Garden Jubilee, one of the largest gardening shows in the Southeast, won't take place on Main Street this year, organizers are coordinating with local garden shops, nurseries and orchards to promote garden sales in smaller gatherings.

The popular lawn and garden show was named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” for May 2020.

This year, the sponsoring Tourism Development Authority will send the public out to the local nurseries and orchards throughout Henderson County to prevent the gathering of the usual large crowds experienced on Main Street. Garden Jubilee 2020 will run from May 22-25, Friday through Monday of Memorial Day weekend, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The modifications to the 2020 Garden Jubilee will follow federal and state mandated guidelines for cleaning, social distancing and limiting crowd size.

Local and nurseries will be selling annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and hard-to-find plants. The orchards will be offering produce, jams, jellies, honey, cider and baked goods. As an added feature some of the nurseries and orchards will host a couple of craft or other garden related themed vendors at their location.

The COVID-19 crisis has forced cancellations of recent and current events and is expected to impact future events and activities that bring large crowds together in the unforeseeable future. The Henderson County Tourism Development Authority’s staff researched the possibility of moving the event into June with no success. For one thing, most people will have purchased their plants for the growing season by the first of June, decreasing the demand and impacting sales.

The TDA will create a brochure with a map and listing the participating Henderson County nurseries and orchards. The information will be featured on the TDA web site, including a downloadable version of the brochure, for easy navigation. Check the web site often for updates of businesses participating.
