City OKs more dwellings on booming North Main-Clear Creek corridor

A city graphic shows the Townes at Martha Kate, a 26-unit townhome development on 13 acres on North Main at Queen Street.

The rapidly developing North Main Street area could get more dwellings if landowners follow through on plans approved last week by the Hendersonville Planning Board.

Mills River developers Rick Moore and Mitch Gaither plan to build the 26-unit Townes at Martha Kate on 13 acres on North Main at Queen Street. A site plan reviewed by the Planning Board showed 16 units that would be 1,485 square feet each and 10 that would be 884 square feet.
The Planning Board authorized the planned residential development as a major subdivision after reviewing the site plan last week. According to engineering plans submitted to the city, the subdivision will provide one driveway and one garage parking space per unit and would leave eight acres open, or 62 percent of the property.
When Planning Board members asked about flood control and the loss of trees, city planners responded that the development complies with floodplain regulations and that a planned residential development request does not require street trees or landscaping nor trigger a Tree Board review. The developers told the Planning Board that they planned to save as many trees as possible.
Tax records show Moore and Gaither bought the parcel in April for $540,000.
The townhome development is one of several major housing developments on the North Main-Clear Creek corridor between Mud Creek and I-26. Currently under way are the 93-unit Providence Walk development on North Main and two D.R. Horton developments on Clear Creek Road at I-26 — the Townes at Stone Crest duplexes and Cantrell Hills single-family home subdivision — that are approved for 334 dwellings. Duncan Terrace on Duncan Hill Road at Signal Hill Road, which won City Council approval for 84 apartments, has not broken ground.
