Two Pardee physicians named 'America's Best'

Chris Parsons and James Radford have been named to Best Doctors in America list.

Pardee UNC Health Care physicians Chris Parsons and James M. Radford have been named among the Best Doctors in America for 2017-2018. The prestigious recognition marks the second and eighth times, respectively, that Drs. Parsons and Radford have earned this honor.

Parsons, medical director of the Pardee Center for Infectious Diseases, is board-certified in infectious disease. Over a 13-year career in academic medicine focused on patient care, clinical education and research in infectious diseases, Dr. Parsons achieved the rank of Professor of Medicine while earning more than $10 million in external funding for clinical trials and original research from the National Institutes of Health and other sources.

“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition from colleagues,” Parsons said. “I’ve been fortunate to work with all of the talented members of the antibiotic stewardship, pharmacy, nursing and infection control teams whose contributions are critical for the good outcomes of patients at Pardee Hospital and the Center for Infectious Diseases.”

Radford, an oncologist at the Pardee Cancer Center, is board-certified in both internal medicine and medical oncology. Dr. Radford notes that he became an oncologist for two reasons. His mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer during his second year in college.

“She was treated by a very good surgeon and did well,” Radford said. “But this was before medical oncology became a specialty and before anyone was available to answer our unending questions, to provide other treatment options, or to help people learn how to deal with this gut-wrenching life event. This experience made me want to be that person.” Secondly, Dr. Radford said he feared boredom. “Oncology may be frustrating, stressful, interesting, exciting, puzzling, joyful and tragic; however, I have never been bored over the years and love learning and experiencing something new in my profession every day.”
