Pardee to add parking, adjust traffic flow

Pardee will begin six months of construction work this week that will include a roof replacement, new surface parking lot and new traffic flow into and out of the parking garage.

Pardee UNC Health Care will begin the next phase of several infrastructure projects at the hospital to improve the facility and better serve the public.

Roof replacement over the orthopedic wing, located adjacent to the main entrance off Justice Street, will begin Friday and will last for the next two months.

Traffic-flow changes include a new one-way vehicle entry from Justice Street and vehicles exiting from the lower level of the garage to Fleming Street. Patients and visitors needing to re-enter the garage will be asked to detour using Fleming Street to Ninth Avenue back to Justice Street. Visitors interested in self-parking are asked to enter the garage using the left lane. For valet or passenger drop-off, enter using the right lane.
“We recommend allowing extra time when planning your visit to the hospital to allow for potential construction-related traffic delays,” said Kris Peters, Vice President, Support Services and System Integration. “We also ask that visitors pay close attention to construction and directional signage in the entrances and the parking garage.”
During this period, some spaces of the hospital will be closed. The courtyard adjacent to the gift shop and orthopedic unit will be closed during the roof replacement. The corridor between the orthopedic wing and Orchards Cafeteria, as well as the cafeteria courtyard will be closed for the first two weeks of the construction project, March 12-28, and again for two weeks later during the roof replacement. The sidewalk adjacent to the orthopedic wing and front entrance will be closed for the duration of the project.
On Thursday, the Hendersonville City Council approved a rezoning request allowing the hospital to remove the old EMS station and add 111 parking spaces in a new parking lot between Justice Street and the parking garage. Licensed for 222 beds, Pardee is required to provide 111 spaces under city code. With the new parking lot, it will have 472 parking spaces.

The project includes an enhanced entrance on North Justice Street, a new exit onto Justice Street made possible by the removal of the old EMS building. In the traffic flow changes, the current entrance-exit will be converted to an entrance only. The city Tree Board, Planning Board and City Council all urged Pardee and its engineers to preserve as many of the trees as possible in the wooded vacant lot reaching Ninth Avenue. Pardee hopes to break ground next month and complete the new parking lot by October.
