Democrats choose Carey to run against Moffitt

Jay Carey, who ran unsuccessfully this year for the Democratic nomination for the 11th Congressional District, has been selected by the party to replace Stephanie Justice on the ballot for the 48th state Senate District race.

A highly decorated tank commander with more than 20 years of U.S. Army service, Carey served in war zones in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as areas as diverse as the Korean Peninsula, Europe and the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, California.

“Service to our country is something that runs through my veins,” Carey said. “My family has served in every conflict from the Revolutionary War through today. My father served in the military as well as a fireman. He instilled in me that devotion to one’s country is more than repeating empty slogans. He taught me that true courage is facing your fears. My mother, who escaped from Russian-dominated Poland during the Cold War, taught me that a government that runs on fear and only benefits the well-connected is doomed to fail.”

The N.C. Democratic Senate Caucus chose Carey to replace Justice, who dropped out for personal reasons.

“While I’m saddened that Ms. Justice is no longer running for the seat, I look forward to taking on Mr. Moffitt in November,” Mr. Carey said. “Tim Moffitt is nothing more than a reliable ‘yes-man’ for the Radical Republicans in the state Legislature. His past voting record proves he cares more for Wall Street than he does for our streets. In his long career as a politician, he has done nothing to protect our children in schools, nothing to protect women’s rights, disrespects veterans like me and less than nothing to protect our environment."
