Legislature 'stands ready' to help, Senate leader says

Phil Berger, leader of the N.C. Senate, said in a statement Sunday that the General Assembly stands ready to help restore communities in Western North Carolina.

"The images and reports we're getting from Western North Carolina are heartbreaking and devastating. Entire towns have been flooded beyond recognition and roadways have been washed out. While the brunt of Hurricane Helene might be over, our emergency response efforts are still ongoing. I want to thank our first responders and emergency crews who have worked tirelessly to help rescue North Carolinians, restore power, and provide necessary resources."

"I've been in contact with the senators in the area and other state and local officials as they continue to assess the damage and impact of Hurricane Helene. It will take time to know the full catastrophic nature of this storm, but the General Assembly stands ready to take the necessary steps to help our neighbors in Western North Carolina.

"In the meantime, please keep Western North Carolina in your thoughts and prayers as the emergency response continues and the recovery process begins."
