Nick Weedman running for Flat Rock mayor

FLAT ROCK — Nick Weedman, a member of the Flat Rock Village Council since 2003 and the current vice mayor, announced on Thursday that he is running for mayor.

In 2008, he was elected as vice mayor of the Village and serves as finance officer, in which capacity he has led efforts along with Village tax collector Martha Orr to collect 100 percent of the total property tax owed to the village for several fiscal years.

Weedman has staked out positions alone on several issues, including his vote against the Highland Lake Road improvement project and, on Thurday, his vote against the budget because of his opposition to a larger tax increase than he believed was necessary.

In addition to Weedman's District 1 seat, the District 3 council seat held by John Dockendorf will be open because Dockendorf has announced he won't run for re-election. Ginger Brown, the District 2 incumbent, plans to file for re-election, Mayor Bob Staton said. Mayor since 2007, Staton has announced he is not running for a fourth term.

A native of Blytheville, Arkansas, Weedman graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1961 with a degree in chemical engineering, served in the U.S. Air Force in the U.S. and England as a communications maintenance officer. In 1965, he joined Monsanto Company in El Dorado, Arkansas, as a technical service engineer and moved up the corporate ladder, serving in posts across the U.S. and in Tokyo, Melbourne, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Although he has no title, Weedman is sometimes regarded as the unofficial mayor of Kenmure, the gated golf course community. He was founding president of the Kenmure Property Owners Association and led the Kenmure Road Maintenance Homeowners Association. He also serves on the board and is current treasurer of Vocational Solutions, which provides  training and employment for people with disabilities. He is married to Merrie Carol (Kendrick) Weedman and has three daughters and eight grandchildren.
