Area gets light shake from East Tennessee earthquake

A Volcano Discovery 'shake map' shows effect of Saturday's earthquake in East Tennessee.

That light shaking you may have felt this morning was a magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Greenback, Tennessee, in Blount County 29 miles south of Knoxville. The tremblor happened at 9:04 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A map by volcanodiscovery.com showed 1,893 "shake reports" shortly after the earthquake, as far east as Charlotte and as far south as Atlanta, and reports from individuals reporting light shaking. One was from Flat Rock, another Arden. A friend from Tracy Grove asked me via text whether I had felt the tremor. No, I responded but I heard my trash rollout cart rattle, turned to our dog Callie and said, "Is it raining?"

New York Times: "As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map."
