The North Carolina Chamber of Commerce recognized state Sen. Chuck Edwards and Rep. Jake Johnson as 2019 “Jobs Champions” in its annual How They Voted report.
The report details lawmakers’ voting records on key bills identified as critical to preserving and enhancing a favorable climate for business and job creation in North Carolina.
Edwards earned the recognition thanks to a 94% voting record based on pro-growth and pro-jobs.
“North Carolina has become one of the fastest-growing economies and best states for business," Edwards said. "Our state consistently ranks at the top for the best economy in the nation because of our business climate and tax policies. Our commitment to increase take-home pay for working people and attracting investments in our workforce continues to draw rapid population growth and cutting-edge industries to North Carolina. As a small businessman myself, I am proud to receive this high endorsement by the N.C. Chamber of Commerce.”
"I am proud of the work I have done to make North Carolina a business-friendly state," Johnson said. "I think it is my duty as a legislator to make sure business owners and employees have the tools they need to succeed. It is good for our community when businesses can start up and expand without overbearing government regulation, they are able to hire more people and expand opportunity to others. I look forward to continuing my work in the legislature to make sure everyone has a shot at the American Dream."
The N.C. Chamber is a non-partisan business advocacy group focusing on economic growth and job creation.
“Transcending politics, this publication is a straightforward tally of who showed up when given the opportunity to improve our state’s competitive footing and create jobs in our communities,” write Chamber President and CEO Gary Salamido.
“The 2019 legislative session saw a number of successes for North Carolina’s job creators and communities, and we are grateful for Senator Edwards’ leadership in promoting pro-growth policies,” said Ray Starling, general counsel at the NC Chamber. “We appreciate that Senator Edwards stood up for the ideas that will fuel our state’s competitive business climate and grow our world-class workforce, and we look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.”
This year’s “Jobs Champion” voting record was calculated based on votes on 38 bills, including 25 pro-jobs bills and 13 anti-jobs bills. A legislator with a voting record above 80% was deemed a “Jobs Champion.”
