FLETCHER — Hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers and supporters gathered at the Agriculture Center Friday night, walking overnight to raise money and lit candles as a memorial to cancer victims.
By 6:30 the event had surpassed last year's total by $10,000, organizers said.
"Everyone's lives are touched by cancer," said co-chair Colby Coren. "It's a common thread that we all have."
After an opening ceremony, Coren invited cancer survivors to lead the procession in a victory lap around a track lined with luminaries. He and co-chair Carol Burke invited family members and caregivers to join the survivors for the second lap, followed on the third lap by fundraising teams sponsored by organizations, schools, churches and companies.
The walkers continued through the night because "cancer never sleeps." This year's theme was "When You Wish Upon a Cure."
