Sandburg event looks at Lincoln and Civil War

FLAT ROCK — Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will celebrate Carl Sandburg's Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Abraham Lincoln with "Carl Sandburg and Abraham Lincoln: Civil War to Civil Rights."

The event will be held Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature an opportunity for visitors to interact with Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by a professional Lincoln presenter.
Throughout the event there will be special house tours highlighting Connemara's antebellum history, costumed re-enactors portraying Civil War era soldiers and civilians, grounds tours showing historic features of the antebellum property, live music and children's activities.
Sandburg delved into the life of Abraham Lincoln more thoroughly than any author of his time. His Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Abraham Lincoln's War Years explores President Lincoln's reaction to the causes of the war and the challenges he faced during it. Sandburg felt a kinship with Lincoln's quest to bring equality to the people, and Sandburg himself explored the challenges facing America through his poetry and writings in the 20th century.
Visitors will gain a greater understanding of the role both of these men played as they lived through or captured the essence of the Civil War and their efforts to bring about civil rights. Young visitors will have an opportunity to play period games and meet Abraham Lincoln. The event, part of the National Park Service's observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, is supported by the National Park Service, Eastern National, which operates the park's bookstore, and the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara.
