Fire Department names firefighter, officer of the year

Engineer David Corey was named Firefighter of the Year and Capt. Cameron Womack was honored as Officer of the Year during the Hendersonville Fire Department's awards ceremony for 2020 Tuesday.

“These awards are especially important because they are voted on by the men and women who make up our department,” Fire Chief D. James Miller said. “Being recognized by your peers holds a special significance. Both of these individuals make a difference in the community, but they also encourage their brothers and sisters that work alongside them.”

Typically, the awards are presented at the department’s Christmas dinner, but due to COVID-19 precautions, the plaques were presented by Chief Miller, Deputy Fire Chief Justin Ward and Fire Marshal Michael Ostrander at Fire Station 1.

Corey began serving with the Fire Department in 2019. He was selected for the award based on his willingness to serve and how he stepped into the EMT Coordinator role in addition to his regular job duties. He helped track medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) and worked to keep staff informed of new COVID-19 protocols throughout the pandemic. He is also described as a mentor with a positive attitude and a willingness to listen. “He has a way of communicating with fellow firefighters that helps solve problems or mitigate situations before they spiral out of control," his citation said.

Womack joined the department as a firefighter in 2015. He was promoted last year to Training and Logistics Officer. Womack was selected based on the leadership he provides and his willingness to mentor and train probationary firefighters. A nomination form outlined how he has a caring heart and a true passion for the fire service. “Cameron is a humble leader who takes the time to connect with his coworkers and create a strong team environment,” the coworker said. The names of Corey and Womack will be added to the plaque on display at Fire Station 2.
